Take-Two Interactive has described pre-orders for Grand Theft Auto VI as “unprecedented and astonishing”, according to chief executive Strauss Zelnick on the company’s June-quarter earnings call.[1] It is the strongest public statement about demand so far — and it comes without a single sales figure attached.

The publisher reported $1.39 billion in net bookings for the June quarter.[1] That number covers everything Take-Two owns: Zynga mobile titles, NBA 2K, catalog sales across Rockstar’s older games, microtransactions across all live-service products. GTA 6 is part of that total but not separated from it.

What did Take-Two actually say?

Zelnick’s phrasing was deliberate but narrow: “I can say that the level of preorders is unprecedented and astonishing, and we’re very grateful for that.” He also called it an “exceptional start to preorders” during a call with analysts later Friday.[1]

Neither statement includes a unit count, a revenue figure attributable specifically to GTA 6 pre-orders, or a comparison against any previous Rockstar launch.

The numbers on record

Take-Two’s June quarter ran from April 1 through June 30, 2026.[1] Pre-orders for GTA 6 launched on June 25 — one day after Rockstar Games revealed pricing — which means they were open for only five days within that reporting period.[1]

The quarter also showed widening losses at Take-Two despite strong bookings.[1] That combination — rising revenue alongside deeper losses — is common during heavy marketing periods ahead of a major release.

What it does and does not tell you

The statement tells you that demand exceeded internal expectations enough for a publicly listed company to put superlatives on an earnings call where every word carries legal weight.

It does not tell you how many copies were reserved in those five days.[1] It does not reveal how buyers split between editions or platforms. It does not provide any basis for comparing against Red Dead Redemption II or earlier Grand Theft Auto launches — because none was disclosed.

◆ Key point

Treat “unprecedented” as tone rather than metric. It is a real signal from executives with disclosure obligations under securities law — but it remains unverifiable without underlying data.

Why five days matters

Pre-orders opened June 25 after Rockstar confirmed pricing: $79.99 for the standard edition as either digital or physical copy — physical includes a code in a box rather than a disc — and $99.99 for an ultimate edition with exclusive vehicles, weapons, apparel, and action content threaded across all aspects of the game.[1]

Five days of availability means even modest per-day volumes could produce an impressive aggregate relative to internal forecasts set before launch day traffic arrived.

Context worth keeping

GTA VI releases November 19.[1] Every purchase made before November 20 includes bonus content tied to Vice City’s retro aesthetic; our price tracker follows what both editions currently cost across official stores.

For buyers deciding between versions now:

  • Standard edition at $79.99 covers base game access digitally or physically.
  • Ultimate edition at $99.99 adds premium vehicles weapons apparel action items integrated throughout progression systems rather than isolated cosmetics.[1]

If you are planning hardware upgrades around launch timing rather than edition choice alone:

Best Controller for GTA 6: DualSense Edge or Xbox Elite compares input options suited to driving shooting traversal loops typical of Rockstar open worlds without assuming one platform preference over another.
