GTA 6 Pre-Load: Date, Size and How to Start

GTA 6 pre-load opens at local midnight on November 12, 2026, one week before the game unlocks on November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S ^[1][2]. Rockstar announced the pre-load date when pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026, and it covers digital pre-orders as well as boxed copies, which contain a download code instead of a disc ^[1][3].

When does GTA 6 pre-load start?

GTA 6 pre-load starts at local midnight on November 12, 2026, according to Rockstar Support ^[3]. The date is the same on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and local midnight means each region starts at midnight in its own time zone. Rockstar has not published a list of times per region, so the hours that circulate on social media are not repeated here.

Pre-load does not mean early access. The game files download in advance, and GTA 6 stays locked until launch day, November 19, 2026 ^[2]. Every buyer, Standard or Ultimate Edition, digital or boxed, gets access on the same date.

Who can pre-load GTA 6?

Two groups of buyers can pre-load GTA 6 from November 12, 2026: anyone with a digital pre-order on PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store, and anyone with a boxed copy ^[3]. The boxed edition of GTA 6 has no disc. Rockstar describes it as a download code inside the box, and the code has to be redeemed on the console account before the download can begin ^[3].

That detail matters for people who ordered a boxed copy from a retailer. Rockstar expects boxed copies to ship and to be available for pickup from November 12, and the codes work as soon as they are received ^[3]. If your delivery arrives on launch day, you download on launch day. The trade-offs between both formats, including resale, are in GTA 6 physical or digital.

How big is the GTA 6 download?

The GTA 6 download size has not been published by Rockstar, PlayStation or Xbox. Estimates in other outlets are guesses, and this page does not repeat them. The figure will come from the PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store listings, and this section will show it with the date it was read.

Free space is the practical constraint. A PS5 can take an extra internal M.2 drive: Sony requires a PCIe Gen4 x4 M.2 NVMe SSD between 250 GB and 8 TB with a cooling structure such as a heatsink, and recommends a sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster ^[4]. Drives that meet that specification are compared in the best SSD for GTA 6. Install the drive before November 12, not on launch night.

How to pre-load GTA 6 on PS5

On PS5, a pre-ordered game downloads automatically once automatic downloads are set up and auto-download is enabled for that game ^[5]. Sony lists these steps for a pre-order.

1. From your games home, select Game Library, then select Grand Theft Auto VI; a timer counting down to the release appears.
2. Select the timer to see the content included with the pre-order.
3. Keep the checkbox next to the content selected, then select OK.

Sony also advises enabling Stay Connected to the Internet, so that the console in rest mode is ready to play the pre-order at launch ^[5].

How to pre-load GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S

On Xbox Series X|S, a game bought in the Microsoft Store installs automatically when the console is your home Xbox, is powered on or in Sleep power mode, is connected to the Xbox network and has enough storage ^[6]. If the download has not started, Xbox Support gives a manual route.

1. Open My games & apps and select See all.
2. Go to Full library, then All owned games, and select Grand Theft Auto VI.
3. Select Install all.

Games optimised for Xbox Series X|S have to be installed on the internal storage or on a Storage Expansion Card ^[6].

How to pre-load a boxed copy of GTA 6

A boxed copy of GTA 6 pre-loads after its code is redeemed, because the box contains a download code and not a disc ^[3]. On PS5 the code goes into PlayStation Store: press the triangle button, select … (More), then Redeem Code ^[7]. On Xbox, redeem it on the Microsoft account you use on the console. After that, the game appears in the library and the steps above apply. The code has to match the region of your console account ^[3].

Can I still pre-order and pre-load before launch?

Yes. Pre-orders have been open since June 25, 2026, and a pre-order placed after November 12 downloads straight away ^[1]. Digital pre-orders and purchases of either edition made before November 20, 2026 include the Vintage Vice City Pack, and digital pre-orders add one month of GTA+ ^[3]. The stores that sell GTA 6 are compared in where to pre-order GTA 6.

The current price of each edition, checked at the store and dated, is on the GTA 6 price tracker. Which edition to choose is covered in GTA 6 Standard or Ultimate, and every official date until launch is in the GTA 6 release date timeline.
